Strainers and Filters

Y-strainers, basket strainers and filters protect pipeline components such as pumps and meters by removing sediment and impurities. However, they have different characteristics and should be used for different applications.

Y-strainers are compact and light-weight compared to basket strainers, but need to be cleaned more often. They are usually transparent to permit easy detection of the screen's condition. During cleaning, fluid trapped in the y-strainer will drain out and must be dealt with. For these reasons y-strainers are recommended when there is infrequent cleaning and the fluid is environmentally safe.

Basket strainers are easier to clean then y-strainers and recommended for applications with a high flow rate. Basket strainers are cleaned by unscrewing the removable top and simply lifting out the gasket to clean or replace. If the system requires continuous flow and cannot be shut down, then a basket strainer should be used.

For the most demanding industrial and commercial applications Filters may be the way to go. They offer rugged, durable, thick wall construction that will never rust or contaminate the process media.
